One in four Americans experiences a mental health issue. No one should be alone on the journey to recovery from a mental illness or substance use disorder.

Atrium Health's comprehensive, integrated system of inpatient, outpatient, school-based, crisis and residential treatment programs, makes us the most comprehensive behavioral healthcare provider in the region.

We are committed to treating the whole person and to promoting wellness in all its forms. Our team of behavioral health professionals can help you or your loved one create a new path for life. We'll be your partner in forming a personalized treatment plan, which may include inpatient, outpatient or a partial hospitalization program.

What is Behavioral Health?

Behavioral health means mental and emotional well-being. From those struggling with mental illness – such as depression or personality disorder – to those with substance use disorder or other addictive behaviors, treatment is key to taking back control of their lives.

Behavioral Health Treatment Philosophy

We believe people seeking help for mental illness or substance use disorders should feel empowered and supported – not ashamed or embarrassed.

With a specific focus on integrating behavioral health into primary care, Atrium Health's behavioral health team is creating a forward-thinking approach to providing care to people dealing with mental health issues.

We choose to focus our efforts on:

  • Screening for and detecting mental illness early by working with primary care doctors
  • Treating mental illness in its early stage
  • Educating our communities about mental illness and substance use disorders

Behavioral Health Assistance – We Can Help You 24/7

Atrium Health has a crisis intervention help line, staffed by masters-level mental health professionals and registered nurses available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The team answering the phone can also make referrals to behavioral health specialists and offer information on community behavioral health resources.

Atrium Health also has the only free-standing, dedicated psychiatric emergency room in the Charlotte, NC region. This ER is for children, adolescents and adults experiencing a mental health crisis and is located at Atrium Health Behavioral Health, a facility of Carolinas Medical Center.

Behavioral Health Services for Adults

Atrium Health is your partner. We evaluate, diagnose and treat adults aged 18 and older who are experiencing a mental illness. We provide both inpatient and outpatient care, as well as partial hospitalization (a bridge from inpatient to outpatient treatment).

Inpatient Care

Outpatient Care

Partial Hospitalization

Brain Stimulation Services - Medications and counseling alone aren't always enough to treat depression symptoms. When other treatments for depression haven't worked well, brain stimulation services like transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and modern-day electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) can be effective. Find out more about these services and if they might be right for you.

Employee Assistance Program

Eagle Program for Teens and Adults

The sooner someone receives the right care and support after an episode of psychosis, the better the outcome. The Eagle Program is designed to help young people, ages 15 to 30, who've experienced their first episode of psychosis within the past 3 years.

Behavioral Health Services for Children and Teens

Young people with behavioral or emotional problems often struggle at home and in school. Problems making friends, succeeding in school and participating in extra-curricular activities can become serious issues for children and teens. Our behavioral health specialists can help.

Atrium Health provides help for children and teens in the hospital and outside.

Substance Use Treatment Programs

Substance use disorders include the addiction (overuse or dependence) to alcohol or other drugs that lead to work, school, home or health problems.

The behavioral health team at Atrium Health partners with our patients for every step on the road to recovery from substance use. We help patients achieve recovery by providing understanding of the disorder and providing tools to manage symptoms. Our treatment programs emphasize education, the 12-step recovery philosophy and the importance of a support network during and after treatment.

Atrium Health offers several treatment options for substance use disorders:

Inpatient Care for Substance Use Disorders

Outpatient Care for Substance Use Disorders

After Care for Substance Use Disorders

Mental Health First Aid for the Community

At Atrium Health, we support the growth of healthy communities. We offer a course called Mental Health First Aid (MHFA). This is an important tool to educate our community on how to reach out and help those around you who may be struggling with mental illness. MHFA teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use. Learn more about the program.
